In anticipation of the release of his debut album “Late Night With Dr Orange” (out October 25th), Dr Orange himself took the stage in the Cavern Club on Wednesday night.
With the crowd already buzzing off the back of support acts Joe Loram, Roscoe Street and Blue Jean, the band took their place, playing a professional game of Tetris in fitting the six-piece on stage, with Dr Orange himself, Blue Jean as an additional vocalist, Jake on the bass, Ryan on guitar, Brandon on the keys and Ed tucked away on drums. With so many moving parts, it felt like all the different energies on stage played off each other which created this really nice, harmonious intimacy. The addition of female vocals really took the performance to the next level with the ability to do harmonies and little duet moments. Later in the set, special guest Bobby West took the set on a little country detour in a truly incredible performance from everyone involved.
The performance itself was nothing short of spectacular. The album is a genre-defying feat of musical talent. Each song is distinct and of itself, taking its place in the collection. From more upbeat guitar heavy indie tunes to slower vintage inspired ballads to some country grooves. As the performance went on I found myself in a constant battle of favourites, with “no no actually this one is my favourite” becoming my catchphrase of the night.
The songs themselves felt so personal and conversational that it was almost like reading a diary. This quality was what brought the songs together into a complete unit. Despite the vast majority of the songs being as of yet unreleased, fans were not left completely in the dark as Dr Orange played both singles “I Found You” and “17” which garnered a generous hum of chorus from the audience. As well as this, he took the opportunity to pay homage to the venue renowned as the birthplace of the Beatles and hit us with a few covers.
I'm excited to sit down and listen to the album properly when it comes out, there's no doubt in my mind that the studio versions will retain the same charm and enthusiasm of the live show.
Update: she's out
Thanks for reading!
