Since the release of his 2019 album Done but Not Dusted, Scottish songwriter and guitarist Joe Sensible has been quietly working behind the scenes and now after 5 years, he has returned with the first release from his upcoming album, the single “Withered”.
“Withered” is a dark and misty folk track that uses impressively crafted, abstract and poetic imagery to create a magical atmosphere to tell a story of growing up but not giving up. Amongst the poetry of the verses, the chorus stands out as a simple yet powerful message: “No change/ Can’t change/ Won’t change/ For you or anyone”.
As the rich lyricism is the main focus of the track, the sound itself is rather gentle, the buzz of an acoustic guitar and the enchanting instrumentation matched with the lilt of Sensible’s Scottish vocals create a moody and mystical atmosphere.
This track has set the bar high for the rest of the album, it will be interesting to see what else is in store!
