Artist Spotlight: The Kowloons

Stephen and Anthony Ng, Mason Jones and Bobby Griffiths make up what is sure to be the next great thing on the Liverpool indie music scene: The Kowloons. Inspired by defining bands of the ‘90s Britpop movement including The Verve, The La’s and Oasis, their influences are evident throughout their discography.

The Kowloons' identity is heavily intertwined with the identity of its members themselves. Formed by identical twin brothers Stephen and Anthony (yes, you are seeing double), they named the band after their grandfather’s hometown of Kowloon in Hong Kong.

Since the release of their first single “Fishing Net” in 2021 they have been releasing a series of singles while also finding their fit with different bandmates. Lead guitarist Mason’s fondness for The La’s earned him a spot in the band in early 2022, and newcomer Bobby (bassist) has been part of the collective only a few months, though he seems to be settling in just fine.

Despite their short time on the scene, The Kowloons’ have already developed a distinctive style, encompassing the bright swirling guitar melodies, and driving rhythms of '90s Britpop with a sprinkling of elements inspired by iconic Merseyside bands like Echo and the Bunnymen.

The band have made a name for themselves with previous support slots for the likes of fellow Merseyside native Jamie WebsterIf you’re looking to get a raw taste of The Kowloons live, their next gigs are:
  • 25th August at Live By The Sea Festival
  • 6th September supporting Ambedo Blue in Rough Trade Liverpool
  • 28th September supporting Real People in 02 Academy Liverpool
Bringing Britpop back with the '90s nostalgia we're all yearning for, The Kowloons are definitely ones to watch in 2024.
