Yesterday I posted a tiktok asking for music recommendations because I want to branch out and find some new independent artists because there are some absolute gems out there that I am yet to discover, and the lovely Scout commented recommending her own music and it is incredible (and strangely the exact vibe I was looking for)!
Luckily, she just dropped her debut EP Everything Will Make Sense on Friday!
Scout is an up and coming independent Swedish artist based in London. Like many independent artists she started out making music in her bedroom, having taught herself how to play guitars and drums in school as well as being taught how to play piano by her grandmother at a young age. She released her first single The Best (which features on this EP) in 2023, and has been working on this EP for over a year. Now let's delve into the EP.
Tracklist:
1. Last Time
2. Hurt
3. Who
4. The Best
5. Gemini Baby
6. Who (feat. Phoebe Green)
This is a 5 track EP that I would describe as being a synth based indie alt-rock type vibe. It has a similar vibe to the likes of Arlo Parks, Ethel Cain and The Japanese House. The EP for the most part deals with themes of relationship breakdowns, self awareness, and self acceptance. I think the EP flows well, it's a well curated selection of tracks.
Top 3 Tracks:
Last Time
This is the first track of the album, and I think it's a great one to start with. This song deals with the death of a relationship but not necessarily in a sad way moreso in a reflective sense. Lyrically the song isn't as intense as a typical break up song but more removed: "Do you still hate your job?/ I don't know I haven't checked." It gives the feeling of when the thought of someone you once felt so much for passes your mind, but that's all they are now: a passing thought. This attitude continues in the chorus: "Now I'm looking right in your eyes/ you're looking at somebody else/ I'm watching you not knowing/ but I've left you for the last time". It's like the moment at the end of the film where the main character looks back in retrospect on what's happened. Despite the theme, the melody of the song is pretty upbeat and has some great bright synths in the mix, which I think works really well.
Hurt
This song feels like a prelude to Last Time, despite coming after it on the EP; it's like the flashback scene. This song deals with the realization that a relationship has died, but whereas Last Time is the reflection looking at the relationship in retrospect, Hurt is the raw emotion felt in the moment. You can feel the heartbreak through both the lyrics and the instrumental melody. The first half of the chorus deals with the realization that the relationship is not functioning "cause lately I've been feeling like/ we take it in turns/ to tear each other down/ and it only gets worse." . The second half of the chorus feels like the realization that its become a cycle that needs to end: "and it feels like we never learn/ we both know that it hurts/ still we keep on coming back when we know we get hurt". In terms of the instrumental melody, while still keeping that upbeat sound, the song is somewhat more intense with more tension than Last Time, which fits with the change of emotion.
Gemini Baby
Gemini Baby is the last track on the EP (I'm not counting Who (featuring Phoebe Green), as Who is already further up the track listing), and I think it's a great one to end on. Its both stylistically and thematically different to the rest of the songs on the EP but it fits into the same realm and I think it suits the EP quite well. I'm not entirely sure what this song deals with but to me it feels like the overstimulation of the internet and feeling so overstimulated but also empty that you feel like you need to consume more, this comes from the bridge: "Too much, too little, need distraction/ when I'm down I want up so bad/ and I'm hyper-focused on my problems/ I think I broke my attention span." . The song has this TV static like distortion and it works so well because its the a spot on sonic equivalent to this dual feeling of over and under stimulation that the song explores. This is definitely my favourite song on the EP.
Thanks for reading, could not recommend this EP more, go check out Scout :)
