This one has been kept under wraps (pun intended), and nobody reads this so I'm going to going to go through my top 10 songs and explain myself. (I was going to do top 5 artists and top 5 songs but I never actually saved the presentation slides to my gallery :( )
1. Boyhood - The Japanese House
Boyhood was the first song from In the End It Always Does that was released and I was so excited that Amber had dropped new music that I played it on repeat. Every day. For a solid month. And that ladies and gentlemen is how we ended up here. Also the lyrics "I could have been somebody else/ but I've been out looking for me" really hits hard.
2. Goodnight and Go - Imogen Heap
This song is a bop and a half it's a great little love song, far from the depressing stuff I usually listen to. I actually don't remember when I first heard it but it's been around for a while. I was very much in a very single little lovey dovey mood for most of 2023 so I'd solidly say that's where this song comes in. Dedicated to the 457 crushes (men I've never talked to) I had in 2023 <3
3. EVIL - Melanie Martinez
So I'm not so much of a Melanie Martinez fan these days (that ended in roughly 2015) but this song really struck a chord and it's just so easy to dance to when you're doing the dishes with a little more emotion than is necessary. The lyrics are just so hard hitting and relatable, and throw in a tune with a bit of a bop to it, I don't know what to tell you.
4. note to myself - david ofmg
Now this one I will admit, I accidentally streamed for 10 hours straight while I slept cause my music didn't stop when I disconnected my headphones, but I think that's a fitting metaphor cause honestly the way everyone is sleeping on this is unholy. Go and stream it. Go and stream it right now.
5. city - david ofmg
I know what you're thinking damn I've never read david ofmg once, and now twice? and yes, his music is just that good! (It has absolutely nothing to do with him being my friend I don't know why you'd think that). In all seriousness this is in my opinion the best song he has put out, and personally I think best enjoyed front row of one of his gigs doing the macarena, try it for yourself and let me know the results!
6. Cool About It - boygenius
The only way to sum up Cool About It's position on this list is that I am absolutely never cool about it. Ever. I believe that boygenius wrote this song about my life, it's just too relatable, if I could string two notes together I'd be convinced I wrote it myself. As Phoebe Bridgers said "I wish I wrote it/ but I didn't/ so I learn the words".
7. Agnes - Glass Animals
2023 was not the year that I discovered Glass Animals but the year I came to truly appreciate them. I find this song very comforting, it's one of the only songs I could list off the top of my head that is a love song that's not centered around romantic love, and I always find myself coming back to it. I think the main chorus of "You're gone but you're on my mind/ I'm lost but I don't know why" really sticks with me as a person who is always thinking and worrying about the people I love.
8. Sad to Breathe - The Japanese House
Once again this was a single I had on repeat while I waited very (im)patiently for the full album to be released. It's a nice little dancey tune with the most depressing lyrics which is naturally my forte, why just say "I miss you" when you could sing "it's sad to breathe the air when you're not there" with a bit of synth and drums thrown in?
9. Body Better - Maisie Peters
This song I find funny because it's not really anything I can relate to lyrically but it's just a really girly poppy song that I want to sing at karaoke, it's kind of like when you were a kid and you sang the most inappropriate songs not knowing what they meant and honestly you were just there for a bit of a sing song. That bridge as well: top quality, like shout out to Maisie for writing the songs the girlies want.
10. Back To Oz - Sufjan Stevens, Angelo De Augustine
Sufjan Stevens and Angelo De Augustine both featuring on the same song is really enough of a reason by itself for this song to be in my top 10 and honestly I'm surprised it's not higher on the list. Also it's incredibly comforting despite once again the lyrics being a little on the darker side, and that guitar solo before the bridge soundtracks my dreams.
This completes the list thank you for your understanding at this time. All jokes aside I'm not at all surprised that any of these made the top 10, all incredible songs that you should immediately go and listen to.
Kat xx
