Regular Rotation: Omaha (The Only What If)

This track is from Nashville musician Katie Lynne Sharbaugh. She has been releasing music for a few years now but I only discovered her with her track The Other Side, released a few months before Omaha (The Only What If), through a Spotify playlist and was immediately a fan.

I waited in anticipation from the teasers of this to its actual release back in August 2023. Now when I say this is in my regular rotation I mean every few weeks it gets played on loop until I can't listen to it anymore.

This song has an indie folk pop kind of vibe to it with an almost bluegrass inspired undertone. It has this viola chop that runs the whole way through as the percussion as well as a normal viola through the bridge; as someone who spent a good 7 years in the string section I'm always so happy when strings make their way into contemporary music!

From listening, this song is about reminiscing about someone that it didn't work out with, feeling that bittersweetness about it but knowing that you're different people and not having any hard feelings about it: "you had a blueprint for life/ I had a bucket list/ and I didn't fit/ so I just made the best of it".

My favourite lyric is "I thought about you all the way to baggage claim" because I've spent so much time in airports in the past few months and it's just this liminal space where memories creep back in and you just end up reminiscing about everyone you've ever met, she's captured this feeling perfectly in the way she sings it.

I'm excited to hear more from Katie Lynne (hopefully in the near future), thanks for reading :)
