Grammys!

Last night was the 66th Annual Grammy Awards and there were quite a few surprises thrown in, to name a few: The Beatles winning an award, and Taylor Swift announcing a new album while receiving an award. I'm not going to go through the winners of every category because to be perfectly honest I don't enough about them to really have an opinion, but I'll go through a few.

Best Album: Midnights - Taylor Swift

I'm not a particularly big fan of Taylor Swift's music, I like a song here and there, but I think there's no doubt that she not only works incredibly hard on everything she puts out into the world, but she's also one of the smartest people in the music industry. I think she's more than deserving of this award.

Best Song: What Was I Made For - Billie Eilish, Finneas

I'm not really surprised that this song won best song, it set the scene for one of the key scenes in one of the biggest films of the year, and even outside of the big screen is a generally relatable song for women everywhere. I'm actually quite happy that after the whole Barbie snubbing at the Oscars debacle that she won.

Best Music Video: I'm Only Sleeping - The Beatles

First the Beatles releasing their newest and last song in 2023, 60 years after releasing their first, and now winning a Grammy in 2024?? I am absolutely over the moon, I have no words. The Beatles will truly never fade from existence and I am so here for it. The award is well deserved, the music video is incredible and clearly took a lot of time and effort, and I'm happy that everyone involved has been recognised for their effort and achievement.

Best Record: Flowers - Miley Cyrus

I understand that when it was released this song was entirely unescapable, but -maybe it's the fact that I'm not a particular fan of the song- I felt it was more of a viral moment more than anything else. As it appears I am very wrong.

Best Pop Duo/ Group Performance: Ghost in the Machine - SZA, Phoebe Bridgers

I am a big fan of Phoebe Bridgers and usually go mad for even a featur,e but this song is one I could never really get into. In comparison with some other songs on this list I'm surprised this came out as the winner.

Best Pop Vocal Album: Midnights - Taylor Swift

Once again no surprises here, but on the note of surprises, while receiving this award, Taylor Swift announced her new album which I imagine was a shock to Swifties everywhere, who have been waiting in anticipation of the penultimate album of Taylor's rerecords: Reputation (Taylor's Version). The album she announced last night was a completely new album called The Tortured Poets Department, which I think fits the vibe of her songs very well; it will be interesting to see what direction she takes with this new album as all of her albums are so different from each other.

Best Alternative Music Album: The Record - boygenius

There's not much to say on this other than I completely agree. Couldn't have made a better decision :). Also I'm surprised that Arctic Monkeys' The Car was even nominated in this category, I haven't heard a single song off the album.

Best Alternative Music Performance - This is Why - Paramore

Now I think this was well deserved by Paramore who have been in the game for almost 20 years at this stage and still going strong; however after knowing boygenius were also nominated for their performance of Cool About It, I was slightly disappointed because this one of my favourite songs. Not to worry though because boygenius still went home with a good amount of awards so they weren't really missing out.

Best Rock Album: This is Why - Paramore

I have been a fan of Paramore since Brand New Eyes and it makes me so happy to see that not only are they still out here making new music and new albums but they are also getting recognition for it!

Best Rock song: Not Strong Enough - boygenius

As a massive fan of boygenius and in particular The Record, I was of course over the moon that they'd won more than one award which was justly deserved. However there are other great songs on The Record which I think would fit the title of "Rock Song" more than Not Strong Enough. One thing that did confuse me was that ballad of a homeschooled girl by Olivia Rodrigo was also nominated in this category. I understand that some songs do have a more rocky element to them but I think it's unfair to put a song that is debatably pop rock at best by a bigger pop artist in with artist that are an actual representative of the category. Genre categories were introduced in the first place to give everyone a fair chance so this seems counter productive.

Best Rock Performance: Not Strong Enough - boygenius

Now as I have said throughout this whole post, I would've been happy if boygenius went home with all of the awards but I found this category so strange because all of the nominations were so different. Nominated were (obviously) boygenius with Not Strong Enough, Foo Fighters with Rescued, Arctic Monkeys with Sculptures of Anything Goes, Black Pumas with More Than A Love Song, and Metallica with Lux AEterna. While all of these nominations are different subgenres of rock I feel that they're all so different that they shouldn't be competing in the same category. They're incomparable.

That's my take on this year's Grammy's, thanks for reading and let me know your opinions!
Kat xx.
